>SPF – My High School Yearbook

>For this week’s Stuff Portrait Friday, Kristine has asked us to show a few things from our high school yearbooks, including the person that made our lives hell and the person we still talk to. I love my senior yearbook, from my private Christian school in 1994. I love rereading all the long notes people wrote to me at the end of the year. They were SO nice! Anyway, here’s my senior picture, a picture of me from softball, and a picture of me from the academic competition team. I can use my full name because it ain’t my name anymore. All the senior pictures I scanned came out with wavy lines on them. See all that stuff under my pic it says I did? Can you say GEEK? Yeah I finished almost at the top of my class and I participated in everything I could, except sports because I was totally unathletic. It was only due to my father’s years of coaching that I managed to ride the bench on varsity softball.

The girl on the right of the softball picture is one of my best friends still today, Kate. I also still frequently see these girls:

That’s Kate again, and Liz who’s about to have her first baby any day, and Lex, and my bestest fruitloop friend in the whole world whom I have referred to in the past, Abigail. She just got divorced and moved to Nashville to get her PhD from Vanderbilt so she calls me all the time reminding what life was like as a college student, staying up till all hours of the night, studying in the library, and lamenting over boys…er…men. I wrote about these girls before here.

And now, the only person I could think of who truly made my life hell for a little while, my exboyfriend Brian Dalton. It was a very small school and most of us had been together since kindergarten, so the only reason I went out with him was because I didn’t really know him. He was a grade ahead of me, a wrestler, and had an ugly blue K-car. He was pretty ugly, with crooked teeth from playing ice hockey or something. And stupid too, which is not good when you’re one of the smartest kids in school. My friends all thought I’d lost it. Of course HIS picture would scan right because it’s in a different yearbook.

We only dated for three months my junior year, but after I wouldn’t “put out” we broke up and he immediately started hanging around my sister, a freshman. She was very naive, cute, and popular, and thought he was genuinely interested in her, but he just knew it would piss me off. She had twice as many pictures in my yearbook as I did, especially because she was a superjock and played every sport imaginable. He told her I was a slut and an alcoholic, and she actually BELIEVED him! I had sipped half a coffee mug of boxed white wine at my friend’s house in front of him once. I was pretty bitter at him for a long time, even after my mom helped my sister wise up and he left her alone. Can you tell by how I drew on his picture? It was my one serious relationship in high school so it caused a lot of drama!

Hope you enjoyed reliving my high school memories with me. Tell me if you played too!

  17. >Finally, the rest of that story. . . I never knew. I think you really overplayed my role in that whole thing. I don’t remember Brian ever saying you were a slut or an alcoholic. Maybe my memory is bad. Actually, I don’t remember listening to anything he ever said. He really really was an idiot! –as were tons of guys I dated. He also sexually harassed me but that’s a different story.
